Easy and Elegant Life

The Search for Everyday Elegance and the Art of Living Well.

Raising Standards.

I encountered my neighbors this morning while I was ending my walk with the dogs and they were just beginning with theirs. It is always pleasant to bump into them, but this morning I was put to shame in my efforts to introduce a little elegance into the everyday.

Andrew had the leash in one hand and an espresso cup and saucer in the other. He saw no reason to throw in the towel just because he had his hands full. He admitted to having broken only one cup so far. “Coffee in the morning in a cup, wine at night in a wine glass,” he offered by way of explanation. “Sometimes the right vessel is called for.”

Now that’s fighting the good fight.

It reminded me of advice that I got when this blog was young: to always set a tray the evening before. That way you have only to fix your breakfast in the morning, and not set a place.

I ate dinner standing at the kitchen counter last night. Mrs. E. is out of town and the kids were doing their own thing.

Standards have fallen.

  1. We could all stand a review of our personal standards from time to time.

    Great blog!

  2. Thank you Brandon. I’m always afraid that I’ve said all that needs to be said here. But, occasionally, I need reminding that “it ain’t over ’til it’s over.”
