The Easy, Somewhat Elegant Post-Work Out Breakfast

I work out at the club these days. Yes, inside! There is no waiting and there are very few people there using the machines. By the time I’ve done my cardio and the circuit, my hands are shaking.

The professionals will tell you that post work out, you have about an hour to eat some fat, protein and something that will help spike your glucose levels to aid recovery. Like a protein shake.

Or my solution for cooler weather days: 1/2 a lightly toasted bagel (whole wheat or everything), and a smear of low-fat cream cheese topped with a hunk of Alaskan smoked salmon.

On the plate, it is much prettier than that meal replacement bar. Add a small glass of orange juice and some coffee and you could fool yourself into believing that you have had a wonderful brunch.

  1. I’m all into the post-workout smoothie: protein powder, berries, flax seeds, and a little milk. No sugar! Those meal bars are horrible for you, and my trainer (who is a foodie) told me whey protein powder is just about the only non-food item you should put in your body. She would heartily approve of a whole-wheat bagel with salmon!
