Our Athenaeus is no collector of excerpts and anecdotes. No, this kitchen table philosopher is just the sort to make his own. Under his keystrokes his everyday travels become extraordinary adventures into the world. Here the commonplace votive lamp takes on a deeper meaning for Christmas.
If I can only make one suggestion this year it would be a gift of one or more Glassbabies. On their website they describe them as “A glassbaby is physically a small, colored, glass cup, candleholder, or vase. But the light of a candle coming through a glassbaby generates more; it gives warmth to a cold day, a calm token of peace in the busy world.” I was touched by the inspirational survivor’s story of Lee Rhodes, the founder of Glassbaby, and the company’s consistent desire to do good by creating and selling variations on a simply beautiful little object. At $40 each they are neither expensive nor inexpensive; you can truly be as generous as you want by gifting a collection at once or over the years.
I thought the attached image from their website was particularly appropriate for the holidays.
Happy holidays,
